Growing Their Knowledge
Elementary Students Cultivate Love
for the Earth & Help for the Needy
As part of their Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds summer program, students from Clearview Elementary in Bethlehem, Pa., enjoyed a two-part hands-on experience at the Monocacy Farm Project.
Together with their teachers and chaperones, the children explored the farm under the direction of Eli Stogsdill, program manager. Topics of investigation were clean water, clean air, living soil, and “where food comes from,” all related to the Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds theme.
When students returned to the farm on their second visit, they were delighted to see how much the vegetables and flowers had grown. Sizing-up the beets’ harvest-readiness was a popular activity, and successfully pulling them up was a prized accomplishment!
Children were reminded to be concerned for the hungry in our local communities and were thrilled to help harvest onions for donation to a local kitchen, where they will be used in preparing a meal for those in need.
